"Back when I was around 20 years old, in the early 70's, before I started painting, I had a pretty strange hobby of cutting pictures out of magazines and then arranging them into a collage, usually glued on board and sprayed over with clear acrylic. I did a lot of these, I even did the inside of my VW with hundreds of small cut out pictures and words, it was an amazing work of art.
This was before they had Photoshop, they called it 'decoupage' back then. I just thought it was trippy, most of my collages were pretty interesting and unusual to say the least. I quit doing them around '73. I think I sold a few, gave some away, and I still have a couple of them.
I've only been able to find photographs of four of these old collages I did in my youth. It was back in the hippie days, when all the kids smoked the green., and the psychedelics influenced a new way of seeing things. These collages kind of capture the historical moment of the 60's and 70's.
This print is actually a detail from a larger collage.
It seems like there was some subconcious stuff going on when I made these. There were a lot of hours I spent cutting and arranging, I don't know why I did them."
